When it comes to protein, there are certainly a lot of sources readily available today. I’ve been known to enjoy a nice, juicy steak now and then, and I certainly eat my fair share of eggs! (My favorite eggs come fresh from Lori’s chickens!) I’m also a big fan of pork in whatever form I can find it. Chicken, all kinds of fish, and lots of nuts find their way to my plate, and to my mouth, regularly. There are also many types of vegan protein that I hear are very popular today, as well as soy.
So, when it came time to develop our protein bar recipe, why did we choose whey protein over all of the others available?
Well, I believe that whey is the best source protein, especially for athletes. I use whey protein powder as a supplement on a daily basis, and certainly after a tough workout. The majority of athletes that I know also choose whey as their protein supplement.
And, if we are going to use whey in our bars, can it get any better than grass fed, pasture raised whey? I think not!
For a more scientific explanation of the benefits of whey protein, I turned to Mark’s Daily Apple, a website that I find very reliable. You can find it here; www.marksdailyapple.com
Here’s some of what Mark has to say about whey protein in his article; Not Just for Bodybuilders: The Many Wheys Whey Protein Can Improve Your Health
“Real food is the foundation for a healthy diet. But whey protein is much more than a muscle-builder and meal replacer. I’d argue that it deserves a spot on the “supplemental foods” list alongside egg yolks, liver, fatty fish, and all the other foods that are powerful and vital in small doses. I’d also argue that everyone can benefit from whey.”
“Whey isn’t just protein. It’s not only a thing you eat to obtain amino acids for increased muscle protein synthesis. It’s also comprised of a host of bioactive components, each with unique effects.”
